How to Get a Free Oil Change

Well to be honest it's not really free but it is a lot cheaper than paying someone else to do it. By purchasing a few simple tools you will be able to change your own engine oil and save yourself money during the process, especially if you are going to change the oil in vehicles belonging to family and friends too.

To make this cheap oil change your need to purchase a set of car ramps, an oil filter wrench, a spanner (but you probably have one of these already) and an oil drain pan. You will also need some new engine oil. I would expect all of this to set you back less than $100.

Once you have all the equipment you need, drive the car up onto the ramps. Put the handbrake on firmly, bracing the rear wheels with some timber or bricks to stop any possible rolling (in case there is a problem with the handbrake). Position the oil drain pan beneath the oil sump and unscrew the drain plug using a spanner. Once all of the engine oil has finished pouring into the pan carefully slide it out, put the plug back in and lower the car back on the ground again. Depending on the position of your oil filter you may be able to change it from above, reaching down through the bonnet. The oil filter can hold a lot of oil so position the drain pan directly beneath it to catch any spillages. The oil filter wrench is used to remove the filter. You can purchase an adjustable or fixed size for your specific make and model of car.

Sometimes you can find coupons on the Internet to redeem against the price of the engine oil. This is also a good way of reducing the cost of an oil change.
