How to Build a Galvanised Dog Run

Once you have made the decision to buy and build your own dog run you will need to think about which type of run would most suit you and your dog.  A chain link run is easier to build and more lightweight but it also won’t last as long and isn’t as good at withstanding the strength of a large dog who is determined to escape.  A modular run is more difficult to build and cannot be easily moved once it has been constructed but will be much more durable, especially if you have invested in a galvanised dog run.

The galvanising process coats the steel in zinc which will react with any corrosive influences instead of the steel itself.  This means that the metal won’t be eaten away by rust and will last a lifetime.

When you start thinking about building a run you will need to first consider how large it will need to be as this will determine how many panels you will need to buy.  Of course you will need to take into account the size of your garden but, where possible, the run should be big enough for your dog to be able to pick up some speed when running around.  Also you will need to decide whether to buy a run with an inbuilt dog house or whether to add a stand-alone kennel yourself.

To save yourself some money you could use an already standing structure within your garden to make up one wall of the run, for example a fence or wall of the house.  Don’t forget to buy a gate as well as these tend to be sold separately from the panels.

If your dog is good at jumping or likely to try and escape you may want to buy a mesh roof to put over the top of the run to keep him in.
