Many of the treatments that tempt to treat health issues based on the energy maintenance and restoration of chi are based on the knowledge and experience of thousands of years of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Shiatsu also has its roots from Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Most people in west think that shiatsu is a new form of massage. However shiatsu has been in existence already for a century. Shiatsu comes from Japan where at least on member of the family knows how to perform shiatsu. In shiatsu schools future therapists learn to apply pressure techniques on the meridians of the body. This is also known as acupressure. Even if there are more derivate schools of shiatsu, all the shiatsu therapist apply acupressure using only fingers, thumbs and elbows.

Shiatsu is performed with the patient full clothed and there is no need of lubrication. So, before the session the therapist will interview the patients to find out about any health problems or other experienced problems. A shiatsu session will be based on interview and the body diagnose, trying to determine where the energy is blocked in the meridians of the body. The therapist will start light massage in the stomach, because there are accumulated the most energy points and will move to other areas of the body. Determining the blockage in the meridians, the therapist will start the therapy.

In order to achieve maximum return the patient has to be fully relaxed. The therapies will apply deep pressure on the meridians of the body in synchronization with the patients breathing. This helps the patient to relax. This form of japanese massage doesn't perform massaging only on static position of the patient. It uses rotating and stretching movement of the patient’s joints. These techniques are also very relaxing. The entire shiatsu session has the aim to break up the stagnant energy in the meridians of the body and restore the flow of the energy.
