Caring For Your Indoor Garden: Easy And Fun!
Indoor gardens, which can include traditional "dish" or "windowsill" gardens, as well as more advanced hydroponic systems, are easy to maintain and provide a wealth of beautiful and useful plants and herbs. Thankfully, they are also easy to maintain, as long as one keeps a watchful eye on the progress of the plants, and keeps the tools needed to encourage growth close at hand. Once set up properly, caring for your indoor garden is simply a matter of occasional maintenance, and doesn't carry the need for constant supervision against pests or the elements the way outdoor gardens do.
When setting up your indoor garden for the first time, the steps you need to take depend on the growing methods you will be using. If you are beginning in pots and planning on using sunlight for your light source and soil to plant in, place a few small stones in the bottom of the pot before pouring the dirt in. This will ensure proper drainage and keep the roots in good condition. Ensure the window you place you plants in gets enough light, but not so much it will burn or dry out your plants. Alternately, a clip-on LED grow light can be attached to a higher object around the plants for houses that don't get much sun. Hydroponic systems, special gardens that use circulating water instead of soil, have these LED plant grow lights built in, but be sure to keep a few handy in case a bulb should burn out.
Other than drainage and light, other items to keep around are nutrient tabs or small fertilizer stakes appropriate to the plant you are growing, a pair of nail-sized scissors to snip off dead leaves or buds, and a mister bottle filled with water to keep the soil moist. With these handy, you'll be caring for your indoor garden in no time!
